Guided History Tour of Downtown Glenwood Springs

Discover the real story of Glenwood Springs on a walking tour of its historic downtown.

The story begins with the steaming waters of the hot springs, winding from one side of the river to the other, tracing Glenwood Springs's journey from sacred Ute healing grounds to a rugged silver-rush camp to today's world-famous resort destination. Along the way, meet the visionaries who made it happen: a squatter, a Civil War veteran, and an engineering-obsessed inventor who moved an entire river by hand to turn an island into the world's largest hot springs pool. Hear the story of the Great Rail Race that put Glenwood Springs on the map, and learn how the town's colorful past, from Theodore Roosevelt's "White House of the West" to Doc Holliday's final days, helped shape the Glenwood Springs we know today. Tour fee includes admission to Frontier History Museum.

Tour Begins at: 9:30 am at North Landing Park. The park is located at the north end of the pedestrian bridge over the Colorado River, at the corner of 6th Street and Pine Street, kitty-corner from the Hotel Colorado.

Tour Ends at: 10:45 am (or so) at Garfield County Courthouse, on the corner of 8th Street and Colorado Ave.

Duration and Distance: The tour takes about 75 minutes and is about one-half mile in length. The tour route is wheelchair accessible (if the elevators on the bridge are working). Restrooms are available at the beginning and end of the tour.

What to Bring: Bring water, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. While shade is always targeted, it can't be guaranteed.

What NOT to Bring: Don’t bring children younger than 12. Don't bring anyone that doesn't already have a reservation. Don’t bring dogs (unless they are certified service animals). Don’t bring bicycles, scooters, skates, or skateboards.

Tips: The tour guide cannot accept tips. However, donations to the 501(c)(3) non-profit Glenwood Springs Historical Society are welcome. Ask your guide about membership and other donation opportunities.

Refunds: Refunds are available if the tour is cancelled due to bad weather or for other extraordinary circumstances.
